What is NDIS Disability Independent Living?

Disability Independent Living, or Supported Independent Living, means that an individual requires support with their day to day tasks in order to achieve their goals. This can take many forms depending on your specific needs. Independent Living for disabled under NDIS funding scheme can fall under either of the two main categories for accommodation, Supported Independent Living (SIL) or Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA). These are funded differently according to your eligibility based on your or your loved one’s level of disability.

Independent Living Options

There are several independent living programs for disability available at Maple Community Services for people who require support with daily living. These options are designed to provide our participants with greater autonomy and support in various living arrangements. These include:

  • Supported Independent Living (SIL): SIL provides assistance to individuals with high support needs, helping them live in shared accommodations. Maple offers SIL support with disability independent living activities, such as personal care, meal preparation, and household tasks, while participants live with housemates who may have similar needs.
  • Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA): SDA offers housing designed to meet the specific needs of participants with extreme functional impairments or high support needs. This can include specially adapted homes, such as those with wheelchair access or other modifications to facilitate greater independence.
  • Shared Living Arrangements: Participants can choose to live with housemates in a shared living arrangement such as our thriving apartment communities, they help to promote social interaction and community integration while receiving support tailored to their specific needs.
  • Respite Accommodation: At Maple, we offer short-term respite accommodation for participants. This offers caregivers a break from the caregiving roles while ensuring individuals continue to receive the necessary care and support.
  • Group Homes: NDIS participants can choose to reside in one of our inclusive group homes, which provide shared living environments with support staff available to assist with daily activities and community participation.

What is The Difference Between Disability Independent Living and Supported Independent Living?

A lot of the terminology involved in supportive services for people living with disabilities can be confusing. The terms Disability Independent Living and Supported Independent Living are two of these often confused terms and for good reason. The terms are usually referred to the same support services, though that may vary with specific service providers.

When providers use different terminology, they may actually be referring to the same types of service provision. Depending on a person’s needs and specific functional impairments, a provider may refer to their services as Supported Independent Living in order to be more inclusive for those who have a need for support, but are not classified as having a disability.

Disability Living Services include personal care assistance, mobility support, meal preparation as well as other services designed to assist people with disabilities in their daily lives. These services are offered to people with disabilities to help them live as independently as possible while ensuring their safety and well-being.

Supported Independent Living often includes Disability Independent Living. However, Disability Independent Living is used to specifically describe providing support services to people with disabilities.
